A common joint to become affected by degenerative changes is the first toe, or often called your ‘big toe’. This joint has a key function in helping us push off from the ground.
When the joint is painful or restricted in movement it will compromise our pattern of walking. Consequentlky heathly toes and especially the big toe is essential for good function. If the big toe joint is sore / enlarged and painful then injection therapy can be of benefit.
If the joint has significant restriction to movement (Hallux Limitus) or no movement (Hallux Rigidus) then surgery is a consideration. Your clinical examination and x-ray will help establish the must appropriate treatment.
OA (Osetoarthtris) can also affect other toe joints. If degeneration is widespread it is important to get checked for inflammatory conditions.
